Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome back to school for the start of Term 2, 2024. As we did with our own families, we hope that your break was a great chance to have longer opportunities to connect with your children and make some great memories. We're looking forward to having them all back at school, every day in Term 2. You may never realise just how much our school staff care about your child. It's ingrained in our personalities and often a large part of why we choose to work with kids every day. Thank you for trusting us with your family.
On Thursday 25/4/24, our school students and staff will march on ANZAC Day and we invite and encourage you to support your child to attend and march with us in this important and respectful national event. In full formal school uniform, students and staff will march from the starting point at the bottom of Seib Street, ending at the Kilcoy RSL Club for the service. At 10.10am, parents are to drop their children off directly to Mrs Nash or Mrs Webster for the roll call and then sign them out and collect them from the Kilcoy RSL following the march. Students are welcome and encouraged to attend the service with their parents. I will email further information as it is shared by the RSL.
Parent Teacher Interviews are a great opportunity to meet with the teacher to understand how your child is progressing in their learning. This term, the interviews are help on Wednesday 17/4/24 after school in the hall. The booking link is below for those who have not yet booked a space. You are welcome to book a telephone interview if you can't be there in person. Just provide the best contact number and staff will call you at your booked time.

At the end of Term 1, we experienced a significant amount of rain which postponed our 2024 Interhouse Cross Country event. This event will now take place on Tuesday 16/4/24.
Each year we have School Photos and this year, they will be held this coming Wednesday, the 17th April. Forms have been sent home and I will attach further information below.
Spotlight on Attendance
If your child will be absent, please make sure you call the absence line on (07) 5422 3366 to let us know why they are away so that it can be recorded accurately.
Our goal is for every child to be in attendance, every day.
Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
In Term 2, students at our school in Years 5 & 6 will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
An information letter will be sent out to parents and carers closer to the time. If you have any questions, please contact the school. More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website: (https://qed.qld.gov.au/publications/reports/statistics/schooling/students/queensland-engagement-wellbeing-survey).
Kind regards, Belinda Nash.

Welcome Back to Term 2! At Kilcoy State School this term, students will continue their learning journey. During the holidays, apart from resting and spending time with my family, I always enjoy the time to read. My preferred genre is non-fiction, mostly educational books. I also enjoy watching videos of experts in teaching. For me it is motivating. One of the recent videos I watched addressed the biggest impact on student learning. One of the factors discussed was student effort. When students are required to make an effort to learn a new concept or a skill, it is more likely to remain in their long-term memory. If it is relatively easy (to learn the new concept/skill), then students aren't learning anything. You probably don't remember learning to tie your own show laces - I certainly don't! I do, however, remember teaching my children how to tie their show laces. It took time, patience (from them and from me!) and practice. The effort involved in learning to tie our show laces meant that this skill, for older people, is one we now do relatively easily. As parents and teachers, if we never give our students time to learn and offer many opportunities to practise a specific skill, students will never learn.
Reading is one of those skills that requires much practice. To support your children learning to read, Kilcoy State School is holding a Parent Information workshop on Monday 22nd April. There are two timeslots available - 9.15am and 3.15am. Please choose one session to attend. While this session is being advertised to parents/carers of students in Prep - Yr2, parents/carers of students in other year levels are also welcome to attend. Please contact the school if you require more information.
Student Safety. We were very lucky to have our local police officer, Sergeant Jacob Lechowski, come and speak to the students in P - 2 about safety at school. Kilcoy State School takes pride in ensuring that our classrooms and playgrounds are places where every student feels safe. Thank you to Sergeant Lechowski for taking the time to support our school.
At the end of Term 1, the students in P - 2 participated in the Easter Hat parade. It was a lovely end of term learning celebration. Students danced, showed off their hats, which they made in class and were very cute! I am sure the Easter Bunny found each and every one of them.
Thank you to all the P - 2 teachers, but particularly to our Arts teacher, Mrs Beck Keast, for being so organised getting the students ready for this occasion. Our school leaders were particularly helpful in supporting this event. We are proud of our community.
Warm regards, Lisa Webster.

STLaN Update: Mrs Burton
In Term 1, Years 1 & 2 students explored How a Story Works and learnt about the stages of a narrative story.
Some of the texts the students engaged with were Just Jack by Jane Tanner, Big Rain Coming by Katrina Germein, Handa's Surprise by Eileen Browne and Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae.
In class the students identified the story orientation, complication and resolution. They then selected events from each section of the stories read to illustrate and write about.
Please come to the library and see the students’ work which is proudly presented on our Tree of Acknowledgement.

Kilcoy State School celebrated Harmony Day on Thursday March 21st
Why is Harmony Day important for kids?
Harmony Day provides an excellent opportunity to introduce children to different cultures and help them appreciate and respect the differences that exist between people from different backgrounds. Celebrating Harmony Day is an important part of curriculum and vital in guiding our children towards becoming positive citizens of the world!
Whoever You Are

Thank you so much to all parents and caregivers for your support during Term 1. Whether you supported us by purchasing at the tuckshop, buying new uniforms or by buying some super yummy Cadbury chocolate easter eggs, your support and contribution is greatly appreciated. With your generous support, we can continue to provide all the good stuff to your kids and to the school.
Our Cadbury Easter egg fundraiser was a smashing success. With over 100 boxes sold, we raised a little over $3000! This will go towards some much needed around the school upgrades.
Term 2 is looking jam packed as well with our annual Mother's Day stall and Pie drive to commence. Be sure to keep an eye out on our socials and for notes coming home closer to the dates.
We all hope you have a fabulous easter and a nice relaxing break
