Dear Parents and Carers
This week on Wednesday 12/6, we recognise the National Day of Independence for the Philippines. Students of Filipino heritage make up 1/3 of our student population at Kilcoy State School. We value the diversity of families in our school and plan to share our collective knowledge with the students this week.
Please join us on Thursday afternoon from 2.10pm for our Open Classroom Learning Celebration. This is a great time to visit your child's class and see the work they have been doing all term. These opportunities are offered each term, and are always heavily valued by our students. The smiles on their faces as they show their work to loved ones is really good to see. If you can't make this one, please try for the next.
On Friday 14/6 (this week) we will host the 2024 Under 8s Day Celebration for all local children. Approximately 200 children will join in age-appropriate activities with other local schools, Kindy, Playgroups and Child Care Centres. Children under 8 who do not attend these are also welcome to attend with their parents. Activities start from 11.30am.
In Week 10 on 17/6, our Year 6 students will attend Kilcoy State High School to experience a transition day, getting ready for next year. We also have Interhouse Athletics Carnival on 19/6 and 20/6. More information will be sent home soon.
Early in Term 3, we will be hosting a safety information session about how to use road crossings safely. In the meantime, please ensure that you and your children make sure to cross at the zebra crossing in Royston Street. Crossing further up the hill between cars is unsafe and sets an unsafe example for others. Please follow our local parking laws, including not parking in the Stop, Drop and Go line during peak hours.
Teachers are commencing their planning sessions for Term 3 learning this week, getting ready to lead your children to excellence. Throughout a term of learning, our staff engage in an ongoing moderation cycle that guides planning and also reporting decisions. In Week 10, student report card will be emailed home to the primary contacts of students. Please update your email address if you do not receive your child's report card by Thursday 20/6/24.
Spotlight on Attendance - 89.9% currently
If your child will be absent, please make sure you call the absence line on (07) 5422 3366 to let us know why they are away so that it can be recorded accurately.
Our goal is for every child to be in attendance, every day.
Kind regards, Belinda Nash.

Collaboration between different aged learners supports school community cohesiveness.
A very big thank you to the Arts and Crafts Team, Austin Adams, Ellie Cooper and Jaylee Patterson from 5/ 6 B who have given up countless break times to deliver fun craft lessons to the Year 1-4s in the library these past few weeks. It has been a very popular and encouraging event.
The team advertised the sessions via posters around the school and were responsible for providing materials and equipment. The collaboration between students has been inspiring. Older students have taken on the role of educators. They have patiently instructed the younger students how to follow instructions to produce paper craft, while the younger students have gained positive role models, support, and friendship from the older students. This week they have a fruit theme!
Recently, Ellie, Jaylee and Austin formally approached our Principal, Mrs Nash, to request support and funding to continue this great work. Mrs Nash was very impressed with their initiative and has approved additional funding for exiting new resources.
Learning Update from 4A students working with Mrs Burton
The Year 3 /4 students have been focussing on writing letters this term. They have been learning how to write persuasively and use modality to influence their intended readers’ attitude and opinions. The students are challenged to write a well-structured persuasive text and formulate arguments to entice their audience to accept their viewpoint. Here are some year 4A students proudly showing off their draft letters.
Learning Update from 1/2C
Our Science unit this term focuses on living things. Over the past 8 weeks we have been busy investigating what humans, animals, insects and plants need to survive and learning about how different habitats met the needs of each living thing.
As part of our unit, the children learned about how plants grow; the different parts of plants and what they need to survive. The children then designed their very own pot and planted some bean seeds in soil. After reading the traditional tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, the children created castles to attach to their pots so that we could see whose ‘beanstalk’ would reach the ‘giant’s castle’ first. Much anticipation was had each morning as the children rushed to check the pots to see if their seedling had reached their castle.
The students of 1/2C and I have been thoroughly engaged in this unit and the children are looking forward to taking their bean plant home soon to continue to care for. I wonder if anyone will be able to grow some beans to share with the class…

Community recognition
On Thursday, one of our students (Parker K) was recognised by the Queensland Police at our parade, for his outstanding community spirit, honesty and respect. Parker chose to show his personal values by being exceptionally honest and returning found items of a large value to the police, to be returned to the owner. We are very proud of you, Parker. Well done. You are a credit to your family and the community.
The Student Wellbeing Hub
https://studentwellbeinghub.edu.au/parents/
In the Kilcoy Community, we have many conversations surrounding the importance of student wellbeing. It seems as though it is an appropriate time to share “The Student Wellbeing Hub,” funded by the Australian Government Department of Education for teachers, parents and children.
The Student Wellbeing Hub is designed to support you to nurture your child's wellbeing. As partners in your child's education journey, we understand the vital role that parental support plays in fostering our happy, healthy, and resilient students. We invite and encourage you to visit the online hub to access additional guidance, resources and practical tools to suit you and your family. This information can be easily incorporated into your daily routines to enhance your child's wellbeing.

Thank you to all KSS families who supported our annual Coff and Co Pie drive. All pies were delivered with success.
Last week we had our first disco of the year and it was our best one yet! With DJ Candi 4 Kids as our entertainment for the night, she had the kids playing games and dancing the night away. BIG thank you to all staff and parent helpers on the night, we couldn't of done it without you.
Our next meeting will be on the 10th July, hope to see you there! Remember you can become a silent member as well - Being a silent member means that you receive all the information and meeting minutes via email without having to attend a meeting.
